Profiling Serial Killers: Limitations of The FBI Approach

The American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law held its annual meeting in Chicago in late October 2006. One of the panel discussions at the meeting has been called "serial killer, from cradle to grave", the perceived limitations of FBI profiles addressed. Among the issues raised were as follows:

The infamous murderess BTK Dennis Rader, who has been a total of more than 30 years, not in the FBI's profiling methods in relation to fit the crime scenes.

FloridaProstitute Aileen Wuornos convicted and later executed for the murder of many men was effectively excluded from profiling typologies because the FBI does not require database of convicted serial killer of women.

The FBI is currently the scene, whether organized or unorganized categorize. A scene of organized crime is to control and careful planning of the investigation pointed out in his room in the commissioning of crimes reported, so that points to a polite andsocially competent individual. In contrast, a disorganized crime scene points to a lack of control and an absence of intelligent decision making. The disorganised suspect does little if anything to cover his/her tracks, pointing to a suspect who is either of low intelligence or a habitual user of drugs and/or alcohol.

On the surface this seems to be a perfectly reasonable classification system but one of the issues under discussion was the fact that crime scenes often have both organized and disorganized aspects.

Dr Charles L. Scott who led the panel discussion states that the actions of BTK murderer Dennis Rader provide a clear example of this. Scott suggests Rader’s first crime scene demonstrates this ambiguity as there was clear evidence of advance planning and his domination of the environment but there were several disorganized elements as well e.g. leaving behind the Venetian blind cords he used as a strangling device.

Scott also points to the problems associated with the fact that in developing profiles of serial killers, the FBI draws on data and findings elicited from interviews with just 36 convicted serial murderers, all of whom were male and 90% of them white; which raises the question of relevance in relation to female or non-caucasian serial killers.

According to Dr Scott “The FBI profiling method has many positive attributes. But it also has some inherent limitations”, and that the purpose of the panel discussion was not to critique the FBI, but acquaint forensic psychiatrists with how the FBI profiles serial killers.

Psychology For Teaching – A Review

The focus of this review is on part five of Lefrancois text, Psychology for Teaching, which contains ninety eight pages. This section is on instructional leadership which is subdivided into four chapters. Motivation, teaching, discipline, classroom management and individualized instruction are topics covered in chapters eleven to fifteen. Generally, classroom practice requires a great deal more than what had been gleaned from educational psychology and reported in the first ten chapters. It demands, among other things, interpersonal and management skills of the highest order, patience, imagination, enthusiasm and worth.

In chapter eleven, the writer examines theories of motivation which attempt to answer questions about the initiation, direction and reinforcement of behavior. A theory is advanced of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs with physiological needs at the lowest and the need for self actualization at the highest. The primary sources of arousal (a concept with physiological and psychological components) are the distance receptions (vision and hearing) whereas the secondary sources include all other sensations. The relationship between arousal and motivation is discussed. The teacher can be seen as the source of stimulation that maintains student arousal at low or high levels. Weiner’s attribution theory of motivation which is presented is based on the assumption that individuals attribute their successes and failures to internal (ability or effort) or external (difficult or luck) factors. Achievement motivation and the need to avoid failure appear to be closely related to attribution theory. Students whose need for achievement is high are typically more internally oriented and consequently more likely to accept personal responsibility for the outcomes of their efforts. Attribution-changing programs attempt to move students in the direction of making more effort attributions. Feelings of competence or better still positive concepts appear to be related to internal sources of attribution and consequent feelings of powerfulness.

In chapter twelve, the writer distinguishes between management and discipline and shows the relationship between them. The former is presented as an umbrella term which embraces establishing routines, learning students’ names, setting and applying rules consistently, arranging frequent occasions for the original use of praise, using humor and paying attention to classroom environment and climate. Corrective discipline is involved when preventive discipline has not been successful in curbing the appearance of a disciplinary problem. Methods used include reasoning, reinforcement, use of models, extinction and punishment. In addition to maintaining classroom order, teachers should also attend to the development of social and affective skills in children. Generally, the chapter outlines a number of strategies and principles that might be effective in preventing and/or correcting disruptive behavior in the classroom, looking at the application of behavior motivation. The single most important point it makes is that prevention is far more important than correction.

The penultimate chapter details the application of science (to the extent that psychology is a science) and of technical advances in the business of educating. Accordingly , this chapter describes programmed instruction, the use of computers in education and specific teaching techniques founded on distinct theoretical principles. Although the writer presents a number of different methods for dealing with individual differences, these are not always highly effective for practical reasons. Programmed instruction individualizes instruction largely by allowing students to progress at their own rates and sometimes also by providing additional help for learners who experience difficulty. Although the writer presents the linear and branching programs, he observes that research has not shown that either is superior. However, they teach effectively as adjuncts to other methods of instruction. Optimistic and pessimistic views about the computer are presented even though it would appear as if computer literacy may soon be one of the goals of the educational process. Among the computer’s advantages are its almost unlimited memory capacity, problem-solving capabilities and its versatility of presentation modes. Among its disadvantages are the difficulties associated with preparing and obtaining software. Evaluations of major system approaches to individualizing instruction indicate that typically those have moderately positive effects in elementary and secondary schools but more highly positive effects at the college level. Conclusions about attribute-treatment interactions are typically very modest. In the final analysis, the two variables that appear to be most highly related to school success are ability and previous achievement.

The ultimate portion, chapter fourteen, describes the various methods by which performance can be measured and evaluated, the reasons why assessment is important, and some of the abuses and misuse of assessment procedures. Measurement is seen as the use of an instrument to gauge the quantity of a property or behavior. Evaluation on the other hand is the making of a decision about quality, goodness or appropriateness that is based on the results of careful and thoughtful measurement. A teaching model can be represented in terms of goals, instructional strategies and assessment. Educational goals are important in determining both strategies and assessment. Measurement can be divided into nominal (categorical), ordinal (using ranks), internal (employing equidistant scales but with an arbitrary zero point) or ratio (based on a true zero). The writer believes that educational measurement pretends to be on an interval scale (usually); it is indirect rather than direct. He presents four indexes of test validity, face, content, construct or criterion-related. Common uses of standardized tests are for special education placement. To certify student achievement, judge the competency of teachers and evaluate schools and standardized achievement tests typically provide one or more of the following: age-equivalent scores, grade-equivalent scores or percentiles. Sometimes they also provide tables for transforming scores to one of several normally distributed standard scores. These scores are meaningful because one knows what their mean and standard deviations are, for example Z-scores (mean=0, standard deviation=1), T-scores (mean=50, standard deviation=2). The writer differentiates between the essay and objective tests. When constructing essay examinations, efforts should be directed toward sampling processes that are not easily measured with objective tests as well as toward measuring relevant course goals. In conclusion, the writer forcefully argues that the teacher should try to behave as sensibly as a bear who persistently faces the front of its footprints.

A major criticism is that the writer did not state the category of people the book focuses attention on. Most of the issues raised and examples given are more relevant to psychology and teaching at the primary and secondary levels. One expects this clarification to be made in a text which has been edited several times. Furthermore, commenting on the computer as a device that counters the negative effects of television is a bit far fetched. The writer fails to take into consideration such damaging effects like immoral and blasphemous websites. Most of the issues in the book could be found in other books on psychology and teaching. The above notwithstanding, the section under review is highly practically-oriented.

Dream Interpretation and Poetry – Interpreting Love Poems

I was looking for keywords in order to write my next article, and since I just wrote two e-books about love and happiness and the interpretation of dreams about the person you love, I was looking for keywords related to love. Then I saw that one of the best keywords was “love poems”.

If you know my story, you know that I have been a writer since I was 7 years old. I have a great literary talent, but instead of becoming a literary writer, writing mainly poetry, which is my passion, I learned how to translate dreams, continuing the work of the famed psychiatrist Carl Jung.

The continuation of the work of a psychiatrist transformed me into a psychiatrist too, the same way that a psychiatrist became a language translator when he tried to decipher the mysterious meaning of our dreams.

I abandoned literature because I became a doctor and I didn’t have time to be also a writer and keep writing poetry.

However, since I saw that there are so many people caring about love poems and since I love writing poems, now that my English is better, after writing so many articles for you, I dared writing two love poems, with the intention of perhaps creating a collection of love poems at my first site, near my e-books about love and happiness and how you can interpret dreams about the person you love, your bonus.

I wrote my two first poems easily, but I really don’t have time for poems because too many people are still sending me their dreams for professional translation and psychotherapy, taking advantage of my summer offer, which is coming to an end.

Anyhow, perhaps after the summer offer and the completion of my new e-book Dream Interpretation as a Science – The Cure for All Mental Illnesses, with all the collection of dreams that I collected on the internet from people all over the world, I will have more time and I may continue writing love poems, which, for me, are very easy to be written.

However, since I’m also your teacher and I’ve been giving you lessons about the scientific method of dream interpretation through my articles, I had the idea to use my first love poem in this article in order to show you how poetry helps you understand better the dream language.

This is why I, a poet, could translate better the dream messages, than Carl Jung, who discovered the correct method of dream interpretation but was a doctor, who lived far from the meaning of the words, languages and translations.

Here is my first Love Poem:

Secret Love

Nothing seems possible or real.

Nothing is simple or attainable.

Will the ocean between us disappear?

Will all walls extend their limits?

Nothing seems sensible.

But nothing can be hidden for very long.

Life asks for our ticket, and examines us at length.

Our facial expressions reveal

the obvious secret…

Is this dream ever going to come true?

Will I ever manage to be near you?

The answer is so difficult…

The future, so cruel…

Separated by the ironic distance,

our eyes and our existence

look for bridges and invisible connections,

beyond ephemeral minutes

and their multiple dimensions.

………………………………………………………………

Now I’m going to interpret the meaning of this poem according to its linguistic value. You’ll see that the interpretation of a literary work is quite similar to the interpretation of a dream, even though when you learn to exactly interpret your dreams you become a true translator: you translate images in words.

You are not an “interpreter” anymore, because the interpreter is the one who tries to understand the hidden meaning of a certain text, while the translator simply translates words from one language to the other, without looking for any meaning before exchanging the words from one language to the other. This is quite different!

While Carl Jung was a beginner and therefore a dream interpreter, trying to understand the mysterious meaning of the dreams without enough knowledge, especially because he abandoned the research into the unknown region of the psyche, I who continued his research and had a better notion about how to interpret the meaning of a literary work, can present you a method of dream translation, which is much more accurate than the vague method of dream interpretation used by Jung.

Let me show you now the literary interpretation of my first love poem:

“Secret Love

Nothing seems possible or real.

Nothing is simple or attainable.

Will the ocean between us disappear?

Will all walls extend their limits?”

The title defines the poem, showing us that it is about a secret love.

Nothing is possible, real, simple or attainable. We see that there is a great difficulty. This is a love between two people that are too distant, either geographically or socially, or for many other possible reasons.

And here begins the poetical expression:

“Will the ocean between us disappear?

Will all walls extend their limits?”

The ocean cannot disappear and walls never extend their limits because they don’t have any plasticity. So, I, the author, am trying to show you that what I desire is something impossible.

When we interpret the literary meaning of a text or poetry, we try to understand what the author’s intention was. We search for the meaning that the author gives to his literature, we try to discover what the author wanted to express with the words that he or she chose to use. We don’t give our personal opinion about the document and its meaning.

So, with the words “ocean” and “walls”, we understand that there are tremendous obstacles to be overcome, so that the couple in love will be able to be together. This is a very difficult matter.

Continuing:

“Nothing seems sensible.

But nothing can be hidden for very long.

Life asks for our ticket, and examines us at length.

Our facial expressions reveal

the obvious secret”…

Here we have a metaphor, a personalization of “Life” as if life was a person that checked for our tickets when we are traveling.

With this metaphor the author shows us that life is a trip, we are in constant movement, and some day we have to give answers, which cannot be avoided.

This part shows us also that the truth cannot be hidden, no matter how much the couple may try to hide it, since other factors denounce them, factors that are beyond their control.

Now, you may think that the author used the words “ticket” and “secret” only because they make a rhyme. However, keep in mind that when an author decides to use certain word in a poem because it ends the same way as another one, he or she has always to choose the word that fits also with the meaning of the text.

Art, the purpose of each word and the purpose of each meaning, make the poem together.

Continuing now the poem:

“Is this dream ever going to come true?

Will I ever manage to be near you?

The answer is so difficult…

The future, so cruel”…

The first two questions and the first answer are easy to be understood, without interpretation. However, the last statement makes us wonder what exactly intended the author to show us with the phrase: “The future, (is) so cruel”.

The future appears in a metaphoric form, as if the future was a person, since only a person can be cruel.

Why is the future cruel? The author could describe it with positivism presenting perhaps a possibility of a meeting and a relationship between the couple in the future, but the future is described as being cruel, what means that in the future more impossibilities and obstacles may separate the couple, instead of uniting them.

And now the end:

“Separated by the ironic distance,

our eyes and our existence

look for bridges and invisible connections,

beyond ephemeral minutes

and their multiple dimensions”.

The first sentences are clear and we can easily understand their meaning. However, what exactly do these words mean: “Beyond ephemeral minutes and their multiple dimensions?”

Ephemeral is that which lasts only for a very short period of time. The minutes are really ephemeral, because time passes very fast and the minutes have a very short duration.

But what are the multiple dimensions of the minutes?

Let’s examine the entire paragraph in order to understand completely its meaning:

“Separated by the ironic distance, our eyes and our existence look for bridges and invisible connections, beyond ephemeral minutes and their multiple dimensions”.

So, the lovers’ eyes and all their existence look for bridges and invisible connections in the short minutes of such possibility and in their multiple dimensions, meaning that these short minutes have a continuation.

They are extended to another level, assuming a different form, so they are no more ephemeral, since they remain, either in the form of memory or in the form of many consequences that result from the brief contact of the couple during only brief minutes.

These could also be the brief minutes where a certain connection between them is possible, even when they are not near each other.

Therefore we understand that the author is talking about a secret love almost impossible to become a relationship between the couple.

You may believe that this is something you understood from the beginning, because this poem was not difficult to be interpreted, but now you have a clearer idea about its meaning.

Now, you can also better understand how we interpret a dream.

In opposition to what happens when we try to interpret a dream, if we know how to exactly translate the dream symbols, we don’t have to guess and try so hard to understand what the dream’s author is trying to say. We simply translate the dream scenes without difficulty, giving known meanings to the dream images.

We know for example that the ocean symbolizes craziness. So, when we translate the dream, we use the word craziness in the place of the ocean. We keep putting words in the place of the images and this is how we discover what exactly the dream is trying to show us.

If the sentence “Will the ocean disappear?” was part of a dream, we would translate it as: “Will craziness disappear?” since the ocean is a very important dream symbol. This is what we do: we look for known dream symbols and we translate their meaning, relating them to the other parts of the dream.

When you learn the dream language according to the accurate translation provided by the scientific method after my simplification of Jung’s method, you discover that it is not difficult and mysterious at all, as all dream interpreters until today have presented it.

For them it is still mysterious because they are guessing, like I was guessing when interpreting the literary meaning of my first love poem, especially when I interpreted the meaning of the minutes’ multiple dimension.

Another interpreter could give them another definition, because an interpretation is the result of a subjective view of what the author was trying to say. Each one interprets the words of a poem in a different way when trying to understand the author’s intention, even independently of their personal opinion.

Imagine now what happens when the interpreter expresses only his or her own opinion, without caring about the author’s intention…

An accurate dream translation is totally different from a subjective dream interpretation, which is quite similar to a literary interpretation.

When we translate the dream’s meaning, we don’t guess: we replace images by known meanings, the same way we do when we translate one language to the other.

Cognitive Dissonance – Possibly Psychology’s Most Prevalent Term

First presented in 1959, after a series of experiments, cognitive dissonance has proved itself in all divisions of psychology. From social psychologists, to personality psychologists, to evolutionary psychologists, cognitive dissonance (CD) is quite possibly the least disputed concept in any social science.

Cognitive dissonance can be described as the uncomfortable feeling brought up in an individual when two or more actions or thoughts are in conflict with each other, or are otherwise incongruent. The feeling experienced by one who is in a position of incongruence acts as a driving force to bring actions and thoughts into alignment with past behaviors as to become congruent.

CD is both valuable for our understanding of ourselves, and easily used to manipulate everyday people going through their normal lives. Without any CD we could be a different person every day, or even every minute. CD slows, or in some cases can even entirely put an end to our re-evaluation of our identities, and our beliefs. If in the past we, for example, publicly professed support for a political candidate, we would be more likely to forgive or even ignore the negative qualities of the candidate, and place an undue level of importance upon the positive aspects of the person.

Many people who understand the mechanics of cognitive dissonance are well known for using this information to manipulate those around them. This manipulative take on CD is shown quite often in popular media, albeit indirectly. One popular internet writer, Slim McDonald, has repeatedly referred to his dubious use of cognitive dissonance on his publication. Some scientifically observable examples of this theory were produced by Robert Cialdini (et. al) in a variety of extremely interesting studies. One example of theses studies involved volunteer participants who were presented with two requests for volunteering, one of which was very easy and one of which was extremely demanding. In the first group the participants were asked to do the latter of the two volunteer tasks. Over 90% of these participants declined. The second group was first asked to perform the simple task (nearly 100% accepted) and then several weeks later were asked to perform the difficult task. This time only 43% of participants turned down the request.

Clearly cognitive dissonance is a powerful theory in modern psychology, and is important to each and every one of us in our daily lives.
